Stumpwork, also known as raised embroidery, originated in mid-1600s England. Traditional stumpwork creations most often center around the themes of flowers, insects and small animals. The three-dimensional embroidery is achieved by layering stitching, adding beads, and stitching shapes around wires, then attaching everything to the fabric base.

Several different titles about stumpwork are available. We carry books by A-Z, Allison Cole and Jane Nicholas.
